About Delhi Metro

Delhi Metro's the backbone of public transport in NCR. It runs across Delhi, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Gurugram, Noida, and Bahadurgarh — operated by DMRC. It's the fourth-largest metro network in the world by route length and moves over 70 lakh people every day.

There are 9 colour-coded lines, 244 stations, and close to 400 km of track. It connects your neighbourhood to office hubs, railway stations, ISBTs, and IGI Airport. Trains start at 6:00 AM, last ones leave around 11:00 PM, and during rush hour the busiest stretches run every 3 minutes.

Metro's great for covering long distances, but you still need something for that last stretch — a bus, auto, or e-rickshaw to get from the station to wherever you're actually going. Fares & smart card

Metro fares range from ₹11 for short hops (0–2 km) up to ₹64 if you're crossing the entire network end-to-end. Fares were revised in August 2025 — the first hike in 8 years. Airport Express Line goes up to ₹75 from New Delhi to IGI Airport.

Get a Smart Card if you commute regularly — it saves 10% on every trip and you skip the token queue. Costs ₹150 at any station counter (₹50 deposit + ₹100 balance). For even more savings, the MJQRT (Monthly Journey QR Ticket) gives 20% off during off-peak hours (before 8 AM, 12–5 PM, after 9 PM weekdays).

What are Delhi Metro timings?
Delhi Metro operates from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM on most lines, seven days a week, with the Airport Express running 4:40 AM to 11:40 PM. First trains depart from terminal stations at 6:00 AM and last trains at around 11:00 PM. During peak hours, trains run every 3–8 minutes depending on the line and section, on major lines.
Which is the longest Delhi Metro line?
The Pink Line is the longest at 59.6 km with 38 stations, forming a semi-circular arc around the city. The Blue Line is second at 56.6 km with over 50 stations (including both branches to Noida/Vaishali).
How to reach the airport by Delhi Metro?
Take the Airport Express (Orange Line) from New Delhi station — it reaches IGI Airport T3 in about 20 minutes (fare ₹11–₹75). For Terminal 1, use the Magenta Line to "Terminal 1 – IGI Airport" station (not served by Airport Express).
What is the maximum luggage allowed in Delhi Metro?
Passengers can carry one bag weighing up to 15 kg with dimensions not exceeding 60 cm × 45 cm × 25 cm. All luggage goes through security scanners at entry. Oversized items, flammables, and hazardous materials are strictly prohibited.
Are there special coaches for women?
Yes. The first coach in the direction of travel is reserved exclusively for women. Male passengers found in this coach can be fined. Platform markings show where to wait. All coaches also have reserved seats for senior citizens and differently-abled passengers.
Can I use my phone for tickets?
Yes. DMRC supports QR code-based mobile tickets via the DMRC Travel app, Paytm, PhonePe, and WhatsApp. The MJQRT (Monthly Journey QR Ticket) is also available on the app with a 20% off-peak discount. Scan the QR at AFC gates — no token or card needed.
How to recharge a Delhi Metro Smart Card?
Recharge via DMRC's official website (dmrcsmartcard.com), Paytm, PhonePe, or other UPI apps. After online recharge, tap your card at an Add Value Machine (AVM) at any station to update the physical balance. Min recharge: ₹50. You can also recharge at station counters.
Is Delhi Metro card valid on Noida Aqua Line?
No. DMRC cards are completely separate from Noida Metro (NMRC). For the Aqua Line, you need a separate QR ticket or NMRC Smart Card. The interchange between Blue Line (Sector 52) and Aqua Line (Sector 51) is a ~300-metre walk between stations.

Delhi Metro Phase 4 — upcoming lines

Delhi Metro Phase 4 will add three new corridors, expanding the network further into underserved areas:

Golden Line Aerocity → Tughlakabad · 15 stations

Key stations: Mahipalpur, Vasant Kunj, Kishangarh, Chhattarpur, Saket G-Block, Ambedkar Nagar, Khanpur. Interchanges with Yellow Line (Chhattarpur), Violet Line (Tughlakabad), and Airport Express (Aerocity).

Pink Line Extension Majlis Park → Maujpur-Babarpur

Extends northward through Burari, Jharoda Majra, Jagatpur, Sonia Vihar, Khajuri Khas, Bhajanpura, and Yamuna Vihar — completing the Pink Line ring.

Magenta Line Extension Janakpuri West → Sadar Bazar

New north-south corridor through Paschim Vihar, Mangolpuri, Madhuban Chowk, Pitampura, Ashok Vihar, Derawal Nagar, and Ghanta Ghar — connecting northwest Delhi to the city centre.
